If you have had enough of gazing at different lists of English words then read on this blog by Ms. Sonu Goel, Founder and Director of Café Converse which is Delhi’s top Institute for Learning English.

Read As Much As You Can

Reading is by far the finest way to improve your English vocabulary. Even as a native English speaker, the more one reads the more they expand their vocabulary every day without even trying.

But several English students have no idea how to do this. Whenever it is advised to students they always ask: What should they read?

And the answer is always the same — read whatever you love or want

If you have an interest in movies read about movies. Read movie-based articles or blogs, movie magazines, movie-based news, and books about movies or film actors.

If you do this you are going to learn plenty of new words and not the words only based on movies but other words too.  Once you feel more confident. Try to read other subjects too.

Use a Dictionary

Almost every student has a dictionary. But it always amazes that many students do not use a dictionary at all. There are students when asked they say they simply do not know how to use a dictionary. Well, you know one thing, that if you use a dictionary every day you will often encounter new words that you may have not heard of before. So a good thing would be to read a dictionary as it will help you to not just learn a new word but will also help you learn its meaning.

Have a Vocabulary Notebook

When you find a new word while reading. You have looked up the word in a dictionary. Now make a note of it. Make this a habit. It may look boring but once it becomes a habit. This way you should make notes of your new vocabulary. Write the English word there use your dictionary to get the meaning in English. Now use the word in your own sentence. This will help you to use the word in the right context.

Category or Theme Wise Learn Words

In vocabulary books, the publishers mostly use a list of words that are divided into categories or themes. For instance, transportation and followed by a list of words that are linked to transportation. Airplane, ship, bus, car, traffic, and many more. Simply make your own category and themes and prepare a list of those categories and it will let you improve in the learning process.

Word Formation

This way is a bit advanced but it will make your English more fluent and precise. Several English words have their root word at the starting. This root could change every time to make the word into a verb, noun, adjective, or adverb.

For examples let us look at the word collection. This is the noun form.

But it can also be written as collect-verb, collective-an adjective, and collectively-an adverb.

If you really want your English to sound clearer then you actually need to learn all the forms of the words.

Please note, not all the words have four forms some may even have three. But the idea is to learn them. So that your word numbers get broader every time.

Write Anything That Comes to Your Mind

Write anything that comes to your mind. Whether it is a story, related to your or anyone else whom you know. Something about your own city or an event that you have attended. You will see that you are bolstering all the new vocabulary that you learned into your memory. And the good thing is that writing is a good skill to have.

These are some of the methods that will help you to learn the English words.
