Are you Preparing for SAT Reading Test? Ways to Boost Your SAT Score

The SAT Reading Test consists of 50% of your score on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT. (The other half comes through the Writing and Language Test).

This breakdown makes the Reading Test essential, but it is not insurmountable. There are no formulas, comma rules to memorize— you simply need to know how to approach each reading passage.

Prepare yourself for a great SAT reading score with these important reading strategies says Ms Sonu Goel, Founder, and Director of Café Converse (which conducts the most sorted SAT preparation classes in Delhi NCR).

Know Things to Expect

You will have 65 minutes to read five passages (right from literature, history, social studies, and the natural sciences) and answer a total of 52 questions. The questions will ask you to do all the things from determining the meaning of words in context, deciding why an author included a specific detail, finding the main logic of a whole passage, comparing two passages and even pinpointing information on a graph.

Select your Own Sequence

Reading questions are not presented in order of difficulty, but they are in chronological way. Do not be afraid to skip a difficult question, and do not worry if you cannot answer every question.

Read Things that you Need

You do not have to waste your time reading every single word of the passage and trying to become a master on whatever the topic is. You have the passage right there in front of you. So, move back and forth between each passage and the questions, concentrating only on what you need instead of getting mired down in all the minor details.

Keep your Views Aside

Mostly, in an English class, you are asked to give your own views, supported by the text. Not such during the SAT. Be careful when you see a question that has the word infer, imply, or suggest. The answer may not be actually stated in the text, but there will still be a lot of evidence there to support the right answer.

Take Dual Passages One Each at a Time

One of your history/social studies, science passages will be a set of dual passages, two shorter texts about a topic.  Attempts questions about the first passage first, questions about the second passage next, and questions about both passages last. This will save you time and keep you from confusing the two passages when you are evaluating the answer options.

Save Main Idea Questions for the End

For several of the reading passages, the first question will ask a general question about the main idea or motive of the passage, the narrative point of view, or a shift that happens through the passage. Those usual questions are not good to do first because you have not read the entire passage yet. Once you have done most of the other questions, you will have a good idea of the overall themes of the text.
