How to Use Debates to Improve Spoken English Skills?

A debate is a discussion between two teams on a certain subject or topic, which engages the participants and is an excellent way to help learn English.

As you must have seen on televisions several times that there several debates being held. Where one person speaks in favor of something to counter the ones where one speaks against a specific topic. Debates are considered to be a healthy discussion where one can get to know both the pros and cons of a specific topic or a subject.

Here in this blog, Ms. Sonu Sood, Founder, and Director of Café Converse Delhi’s leading Institute for Learning Speaking English tells things you need to while doing debate and how it can improve your spoken English skills.

For a Debate Split the Students English in the Classroom

You need the classroom to divided into two teams. One of the teams then argues in favor of the topic and the other team argues against the topic.  The members of the club have to be able to give good and logical reasons behind their opinions and the teams alternate in giving their opinions.  There must be equal numbers on each team.

One of the members of the classroom or the teacher can be the judge who then decides which team is the winner towards the end of the debate.

Debating in English Helps Improve One’s Fluency, Vocabulary and Confidence

Both the adults and teenagers have opinions on several of today’s major and minor issues and while debating on them is a top way to help improve the fluency of their English. By selecting popular debating topics everyone will be in a position to express their own views or opinions with people they know without feeling shy or embarrassed.

If the topic or subject of the debate is given in advance and the team knows whether they are speaking in favor or against the topic being debated, then they can study or research the topic together and plan what they wish to say.  By letting the students time to further study the topic they can learn new vocabulary to boost their case in favor or against the topic being debated.

Each of the students needs to be encouraged to take participate in the debate. Prior to the judge makes a decision as to which team wins the debate, both teams require a few minutes to prepare a summary that consists of several points on the given topic of their arguments and the judge then decides which team has made the best possible case either ‘for’ or ‘against’ the debate’s topic and declares which is the winning team.  The students participating in the debate need to be able to relate to the subject they are discussing.

Since the participation students are supposed to speak on the topic includes several hours of study time related to the topic for which you need to read various sources such as textbooks, articles, or even search web pages. By doing so one is also boosting their skills as they are able to explore various new words and terminologies in English.

Besides, they also get to know how to speak while they are in a debate. All these factors contribute towards enhancing one’s English-speaking skills later on. As the more, you speak you gain confidence and as a result of that, your English gets better day by day.
