Are you Preparing for TOEFL? Preparation Strategies that Will Help you

Taking the TOEFL is almost always a quite stressful experience. You have to get a specific score. You pay plenty to take the test. You have been preparing for months. The test center might be noisy or crowded. You may not have slept or rest well the night before.

There is nothing to be done about any of those, but starting to prepare for the TOEFL well in advance is one of the finest things you can do to reduce your level of stress on test day. Here are some TOEFL preparation strategies shared by Ms Sonu Goel, Founder and Director of Café Converse, Delhi’s top English learning institute for TOEFL.

Be a Good Note Taker

During the TOEFL, one only gets to listen to audio clips once. You will then have to respond to questions, speak, or write on the matter you heard about. Because you can’t replay the audio, you ought to become a good note-taker. One can practice taking notes in their native language or in English. It is perhaps best to do some of both. Your aim is to learn to take notes in actual time, without missing anything the speaker says. Try with several audio clips of different lengths and levels of complexity, then listen to those clips again and see how accurate your notes are. Pay close attention to things that might seem elementary such as the layout of your notes and the legibility of your handwriting. Being able to take notes confidently and record all the vital pieces of information in real-time will be a great help to you on your TOEFL test.

Take Practice Tests

When one is preparing for the TOEFL, they are almost always looking for a specific score. During your TOEFL preparation time, you can only know if you are nearing your target by taking practice tests. Practice tests will also assist you to get a feeling for the test environment, kind of questions, and constraints you will be encountered with on test day. There are various ways to get TOEFL practice, including some free EF SET tests to track your progress.

Listen to Podcasts

There is plenty of English-language talk shows available for online radio, whether you prefer the BBC, comedy or news. Listening to native English speakers speaking English at their usual speed will boost your listening comprehension. You can also develop your speaking skills by playing back small parts of the podcast and trying to mimic the pronunciation of the speaker. Understanding a recording is difficult than understanding a video because there are not the same context clues. That makes podcasts good for listening comprehension practice compared to watching movies or TV shows in English.

Read Daily

Even native English speakers develop their vocabularies by reading. The more widely you read, the more exposure you get to ideas and vocabulary. The more closely you read, the more you develop your reading comprehension skills. Read broadly and closely to broaden the range of subjects you are comfortable in English. You never know what subjects will come up on your TOEFL test, so it is best to have an expanded comfort zone.

Practice and learn to Touch Type

The writing section of the exam needs you to type your answers on an unfamiliar computer having a QWERTY keyboard. If you spend your entire time struggling with the keyboard, you are not going to have much time left to write a good answer. It looks like a simple skill, but several people forget to prepare for it. Make certain you can type faster in English on a QWERTY keyboard well prior to your test date. There are plenty of free online tools to help you learn touch typing.
